Butyl rubber (Polyisobutylene-co-isoprene,abbreviated as IIR) is the world's fourth-largest type of synthetic rubber (SR). It is the product of the cationic polymerization of isobutylene and isoprene, catalyzed by a Friedel-Crafts catalyst. It appears as a white or pale yellow solid, is odorless and tasteless, possesses a very low glass transition temperature, and is insoluble in ethanol and acetone.
