Butyl Rubber (IIR)-also known as isobutylene-isoprene rubber (CAS 9010-85-9, industrial grade)-is a high-performance synthetic elastomer. It possesses excellent sealing capabilities, durability, and environmental resistance.
Butyl rubber is produced through the copolymerization of isobutylene with a small amount of isoprene, resulting in a rubber material characterized by a saturated molecular structure. It is widely utilized across various industrial sealing and protection systems.

Butyl Rubber Properties
- Air Tightness:
Butyl rubber has extremely low gas permeability, about 1/7 of natural rubber and 1/5 of SBR.
- Thermal Stability:
Stable performance at elevated temperatures. Sulfur-cured grades can be used around 100°C, while resin-cured types can reach 150–200°C.
- Aging Resistance:
Excellent resistance to ozone and weathering, about 10 times better than natural rubber and SBR.
- Chemical Resistance:
Good resistance to acids, alkalis, and animal/vegetable oils.
- Shock Absorption:
Good vibration and impact energy absorption due to its molecular structure.
- Low Temperature Flexibility:
Flexible at low temperatures with a low glass transition temperature and good elasticity.
- Electrical Properties:
Excellent insulation performance, high volume resistivity, and low dielectric loss.
- Water Resistance:
Very low water permeability, only about 1/10–1/15 of most common rubbers.
