Is polyisobutylene (CAS 9003-27-4) toxic?

Polyisobutylene (PIB) is a very versatile, non-toxic, water white viscous liquid and is available in various molecular weights and viscosity ranges. It is used in various cosmetic and personal products as in the formulation of lipsticks, eye and facial makeup, skin care products and suntan products.

Symptoms/effects : Not expected to present a significant hazard under anticipated conditions of normal use.

Symptoms/effects after inhalation : Overexposure to vapours may result in cough.

Symptoms/effects after skin contact : Heated product causes burns.

Polyisobutylene (PIB) Chemical Properties

Polyisobutylene is a polymeric compound with a molecular structure similar to alkyl compounds, characterized by high molecular weight and low polarity. It can react with various chemicals such as acids, bases, and oxidizing agents. Additionally, due to the presence of multiple methyl groups along its main chain, polyisobutylene exhibits excellent thermal stability, corrosion resistance, and aging resistance.

Polyisobutylene (PIB) Physical Properties

At room temperature, PIB exists as a colorless, transparent liquid or semi-solid substance exhibiting favorable emulsifying properties, adhesion, and water solubility. At low temperatures, the viscosity of polyisobutylene increases, and it gradually transitions to a solid state.
