Polyisobutylene (PIB) is a very versatile, non-toxic, water-white viscous liquid and has the ability to increase tackiness, to provide water-repellency, to improve viscosity-index and it provides excellent electrical insulation.
Based on molecular weight, PIB is primarily divided into two categories:
- Low Molecular Weight Polyisobutylene (LM-PIB): Typically ranging from 350 to 3500 molecular weight, it is a viscous liquid or semi-fluid. It exhibits excellent tackifying properties, sealing capabilities, and electrical insulation.
- High Molecular Weight Polyisobutylene (HM-PIB): Typically ranging from 100,000 to 10,000,000 or higher in molecular weight, it is a rubber-like elastic solid. It exhibits outstanding gas barrier properties and high damping characteristics.
What is PIB material (CAS 9003-27-4) used for?
- Petroleum Additives: Polyisobutylene (PIB) serves as a lubricant additive to enhance lubricant performance.
- Adhesives: PIB exhibits excellent adhesion and elasticity, making it suitable for manufacturing pressure-sensitive adhesives, sealants, and similar products.
- Wires and Cables: Polyisobutylene can be used to manufacture insulation layers for wires and cables, enhancing electrical insulation properties.
- Plasticizer: Polyisobutylene (PIB) can serve as a plasticizer for plastics, improving processing properties and flexibility.
- Other Applications: Polyisobutylene (PIB) is also used in the production of rubber products, coatings, inks, and other fields.
