Halogenated Butyl Rubber: A High-Performance Synthetic Elastomer With Both Airtightness And Chemical Resistance

Oct 18, 2025 Leave a message

Halogenated butyl rubber is a type of synthetic elastomer obtained by halogenation modification of butyl rubber. By introducing chlorine or bromine atoms into the molecular chain, it significantly improves the shortcomings of the original butyl rubber in terms of vulcanization speed, adhesion, and compatibility with other rubbers, becoming an important industrial material with excellent airtightness, chemical resistance, and durability.

Butyl rubber is copolymerized from isobutylene and a small amount of isoprene. Its molecular chain is highly saturated, with densely packed methyl side chains, giving the material extremely low air permeability, especially high resistance to gas molecule diffusion. Therefore, it has long held an advantage in tire inner tubes, sealing products, and other fields. However, due to its extremely low double bond content, butyl rubber has a slow vulcanization speed and is difficult to bond with most general-purpose rubbers, limiting its wide range of composite applications. Halogenated butyl rubber, by substituting some hydrogen atoms with chlorine or bromine, not only introduces active sites for conventional vulcanization but also enhances molecular polarity, accelerating the vulcanization rate and enabling effective co-vulcanization and bonding with natural rubber, styrene-butadiene rubber, and other rubbers.

In terms of performance characteristics, halogenated butyl rubber retains the advantages of butyl rubber, such as low air permeability and excellent aging and chemical corrosion resistance, while further enhancing its resistance to oils, acids, alkalis, and ozone. Chlorinated butyl rubber and brominated butyl rubber differ slightly in their performance focus: the former has better processing fluidity and relatively controllable costs; the latter has higher reactivity, more outstanding adhesive properties and heat resistance, and is suitable for applications requiring stringent interfacial bonding strength and high-temperature stability. Both types of products maintain good elasticity over a wide temperature range, have low glass transition temperatures, stable resilience, and excellent fatigue resistance under repeated deformation.

In terms of application areas, the advantages of halogenated butyl rubber are fully utilized in many industries. In the tire industry, it is widely used in airtight layers, significantly reducing pressure loss, extending tire life, and improving driving safety. In automotive sealing systems, its weather resistance and media resistance ensure long-term reliable sealing of doors, windows, hoods, and other components. In the pharmaceutical field, its low permeability, chemical inertness, and sterilizability are utilized to manufacture pharmaceutical stoppers and seals, meeting high cleanliness and barrier requirements. Furthermore, in chemical corrosion-resistant linings, building waterproof membranes, and specialty hoses, halogenated butyl rubber provides long-lasting protection due to its acid and alkali resistance and ozone resistance.

In recent years, with the increasing demand for green manufacturing and high performance, the production process of halogenated butyl rubber has been continuously optimized. Through improvements in catalytic systems and energy-saving measures, low-emission, high-efficiency manufacturing has been achieved. Simultaneously, technologies such as blending and nanofilling enhance its mechanical strength and heat resistance, further expanding its application in emerging fields such as new energy equipment sealing and high-end medical products.

Overall, halogenated butyl rubber has core advantages such as low air permeability, aging resistance, easy vulcanization and wide compatibility. It plays an irreplaceable role in key fields such as transportation, medical and health, chemical protection and construction engineering. The continuous upgrading of its performance and functions will provide more solid material support for the reliability and safety of modern industry.
