What is Butyl Rubber (IIR)?


Butyl rubber (IIR), a synthetic rubber produced by copolymerizing isobutylene with small amounts of isoprene. Valued for its chemical inertness, impermeability to gases, and weatherability, butyl rubber is employed in the inner linings of automobile tires and in other specialty applications.

 

 

What Are The Disadvantages Of Butyl Rubber (IIR)?

 

Butyl rubber (IIR) possesses excellent gas impermeability, heat resistance, ozone resistance, and chemical resistance. However, it also exhibits several notable drawbacks, primarily manifested in the following aspects:

 

 

Slow Vulcanization Rate

 

One major drawback of butyl rubber (IIR) is its slow vulcanization speed. Due to the extremely low content of double bonds in its molecular structure-typically only 0.5% to 0.33%-the curing reaction is significantly slower than that of highly unsaturated rubbers such as natural rubber (NR). As a result, IIR rubber compounds usually require higher curing temperatures or longer vulcanization times, which can reduce production efficiency.

 


Poor Tack and Limited Compatibility with Other Rubbers

 

Butyl rubber exhibits relatively poor self-tack and limited compatibility with other elastomers. It does not blend or bond easily with materials such as NR, SBR, or BR. To improve adhesion, tackifiers, bonding agents, or adhesive layers are often required. This limitation restricts the use of butyl rubber IIR in multi-layer composite rubber products.

 


Lower Elastic Recovery

 

Compared with natural rubber and some synthetic rubbers, butyl rubber (IIR) has lower elastic recovery. This means it is less suitable for applications that demand high rebound resilience or dynamic elasticity, such as vibration-intensive or high-flexing components.

 


Higher Production Cost

The manufacturing cost of butyl rubber (IIR) is relatively high. This is mainly due to its low-temperature cationic polymerization process and the cost of specialized raw materials. As a result, IIR rubber prices are generally higher than those of conventional rubbers, which can impact cost-sensitive applications.
