Applications of Butyl Rubber (IIR)

Butyl Rubber (IIR) is widely used across multiple industries due to its excellent air impermeability, heat resistance, ozone resistance, and chemical stability. These performance advantages make IIR rubber an essential material for demanding industrial and commercial applications.

Tire Industry

The tire sector is the largest consumer of Butyl Rubber (IIR). It is the core material for tire inner tubes and tire inner liner compounds, especially halogenated butyl rubber (CIIR and BIIR). These materials are extensively used in automobile, truck, and aircraft tires. In China, tire-related applications account for approximately 84.6% of total butyl rubber consumption, primarily for air retention layers that enhance tire safety and durability.

Pharmaceutical Packaging

Butyl rubber is widely used in pharmaceutical closures, such as rubber stoppers for injectable vials and infusion bottles. Owing to its chemical inertness and low extractables, IIR ensures drug safety and stability. Medical packaging applications represent about 10.5% of domestic butyl rubber consumption.

Construction Waterproofing

In the construction industry, butyl rubber membranes and self-adhesive butyl tapes are used for roofing systems, underground structures, and waterproof sealing. The material offers outstanding weather resistance, aging resistance, and extremely low water vapor permeability, making it ideal for long-term waterproofing solutions.

Sealing Materials

Butyl-based hot melt sealants are commonly applied in insulating glass secondary sealing, photovoltaic module edge sealing, and automotive lighting systems. These sealants provide long-lasting adhesion, excellent UV resistance, and reliable air and moisture sealing performance.

Other Applications

Beyond the above sectors, Butyl Rubber (IIR) is also used in chewing gum base (non-nutritive gum base), wire and cable insulation, vibration damping materials, rubber dams, and anti-corrosion rubber products, further demonstrating its versatility across industrial fields.
