What is PIB (CAS 9003-27-4) material?

Polyisobutylene (PIB) is the polymer of isobutene, the main component of butyl rubber. One of the most important properties is its solubility in water. This property makes the product group to a universally usable polymer, for a variety of different industrial applications.

Chemical Structure Of PIB material

Polyisobutylene is a polymer with the repeating unit derived from isobutylene (C₄H₈). It is synthesized through the polymerization of isobutylene, which can be controlled to produce different molecular weights and thus different grades of PIB with specific properties.

PIB Material Properties

PIB Chemical Properties
PIB material is a polymeric compound with a molecular structure similar to alkyl compounds, featuring high molecular weight and low polarity. It can react with various chemicals such as acids, bases, and oxidizing agents. Additionally, the presence of multiple methyl groups along the polyisobutylene backbone confers excellent thermal stability, corrosion resistance, and aging resistance.

PIB Physical Properties
At room temperature, PIB material exists as a colorless, transparent liquid or semi-solid substance exhibiting good emulsifying properties, adhesion, and water solubility. At low temperatures, the viscosity of polyisobutylene increases, and it gradually solidifies.

Applications of Polyisobutylene (PIB)

Sealants
Polyisobutylene features excellent resistance to atmospheric exposure, aging, and weathering, along with outstanding water vapor impermeability. These properties make it highly suitable for the production of various sealants, including insulating glass sealants.

In sealant formulations, PIB improves flexibility, durability, and sealing performance, helping maintain long-term airtightness and moisture resistance.

Rubber Modification
Polyisobutylene offers excellent aging resistance and plasticizing performance, making it an effective material for rubber modification. It is widely used in the manufacture of high-voltage self-adhesive insulation tapes, rubber sealing strips, and related rubber products, where flexibility and long service life are required.

Paraffin and Wax Blends
When blended with paraffin wax or microcrystalline wax, polyisobutylene enhances tensile strength and improves the brittleness characteristics of the final product. This combination is particularly useful in frozen food packaging, where improved flexibility and acid resistance are essential.

Printing Inks
In printing inks, polyisobutylene functions as a thickener and dispersing agent. It is commonly used in paste-type printing inks, polyethylene gravure inks, and rotary printing inks.

PIB also acts as a tackifier, preventing ink cracking and improving adhesion during printing and drying processes.

Greases and Lubrication
The addition of polyisobutylene to lubricating greases enhances tackiness and extreme-pressure (EP) performance, improving load-bearing capacity and wear resistance.

Other Applications

  • Polyisobutylene is also used in:
  • High-polymer material modification
  • Tackifier masterbatches for stretch films
  • Damping greases and vibration-absorbing materials
