Highly Reactive Polyisobutylene (HR-PIB): Structure, Advantages, And Applications

Jan 23, 2026 Leave a message

What Is Highly Reactive Polyisobutylene (HR-PIB)?

Highly Reactive Polyisobutylene (HR-PIB) is a premium grade of polyisobutylene (PIB) with a high content of vinylidene terminal double bonds. Compared with conventional PIB, HR-PIB shows much higher chemical reactivity.

Structure and Properties

HR-PIB has the same saturated backbone as standard polyisobutylene polymer, but features highly reactive vinylidene end groups.
This structure provides:

  • High reactivity
  • Excellent thermal and oxidative stability
  • Good chemical resistance and compatibility

Applications of HR-PIB

  • Lubricant additives: Core raw material for PIBSA and ashless dispersants
  • Engine oils and fuels: Improves cleanliness and deposit control
  • Specialty chemicals: Used in functional polymers and intermediates
