polyisobutylene (PIB)Properties

Chemical Properties of PIB (Polyisobutylene CAS 9003-27-4 )

Polyisobutylene is a polymeric compound with a molecular structure similar to alkyl compounds, characterized by high molecular weight and low polarity. It can react with various chemicals such as acids, bases, and oxidizing agents. Additionally, due to the presence of multiple methyl groups along its main chain, polyisobutylene exhibits excellent thermal stability, corrosion resistance, and aging resistance.

Physical Properties of PIB (Polyisobutylene CAS 9003-27-4 )

At room temperature, polyisobutylene exists as a colorless, transparent liquid or semi-solid substance. It exhibits favorable emulsifying properties, adhesion, and water solubility. At low temperatures, its viscosity increases, and it gradually transitions to a solid state.

Polyisobutylene (PIB) is polymerized from isobutylene. According to molecular weights, it is divided into low molecular weight polyisobutylene, medium molecular weight polyisobutylene, and high molecular weight polyisobutylene;

According to the vinyl molar fraction, it is divided into polyisobutylene with high activity and polyisobutylene with low activity. The finished PIB is a mixture of three main isomers (type alpha, type B, and type T). Among them, the type alpha olefin end group has the highest activity and type T is basically inactive. The content and relative molecular mass of active end groups are its most important quality parameters and serve as the main technical indicators for production control and product inspection.

Highly Reactive low molecular weight polyisobutylene HRPIB is a polyisobutylene product with an alpha-double bond (at the chain end) content exceeding 70%;

According to levels of hygiene, it is divided into food-grade polyisobutylene and industrial-grade polyisobutylene.

What are the applications of polyisobutylene?

  • Petroleum Additives: PIB can be used as a lubricant additive to enhance lubricant performance.
  • Adhesives: Polyisobutylene possesses excellent adhesion and elasticity, making it suitable for manufacturing pressure-sensitive adhesives, sealants, and similar products.
  • Wires and Cables: Polyisobutylene can be used to manufacture insulation layers for wires and cables, enhancing electrical insulation properties.
  • Plasticizers: Polyisobutylene can serve as a plasticizer for plastics, improving processing properties and flexibility.
  • Other Applications: Polyisobutylene is also used in the production of rubber products, coatings, inks, and other fields.
