Polyisobutylene (PIB, CAS 9003-27-4) is a colorless, odorless, and non-toxic saturated hydrocarbon polymer. Owing to its excellent chemical stability, heat resistance, weather resistance, gas barrier performance, and electrical insulation properties, polyisobutylene plays an important role in lubricants, adhesives, and rubber compounds.

 

The properties and applications of polyisobutylene are closely related to its molecular weight, and PIB is generally classified into low molecular weight, medium molecular weight, and high molecular weight polyisobutylene.

Applications of Polyisobutylene in Lubricants

 

Polyisobutylene is a key component in lubricant and fuel oil additives, with low molecular weight polyisobutylene being the most widely used.

 

Ashless Dispersants

Low molecular weight PIB polymer can be chemically modified (for example, by reacting with maleic anhydride) to produce ashless dispersants. These additives effectively prevent the formation of carbon deposits and sludge in engines, keeping engines clean. They are widely used in internal combustion engine oils, transmission oils, and hydraulic fluids.

 

Viscosity Modifier and Oiliness Agent

Polyisobutylene improves the viscosity index of lubricating oils, enhancing performance stability across high and low temperatures. It also strengthens oil film adhesion, reducing friction and wear.

 

Other Functions

In oilfield applications, PIB can be used as a drag-reducing phase and fluid loss reducer in oil-based fracturing fluids, as well as a wax deposition dispersant.

 

 

Applications of Polyisobutylene in Adhesives

 

Polyisobutylene is widely used in the adhesive industry, covering applications from consumer products to industrial sealing systems.

 

Chewing Gum Base

Medium molecular weight polyisobutylene is a core base material for chewing gum and bubble gum. It provides good chewability and elasticity and is non-toxic and odorless, meeting food-grade standards such as FDA and GB 2760.

 

Pressure-Sensitive Adhesives and Sealants

Thanks to its excellent adhesion and cohesion, PIB polymer is an important raw material for pressure-sensitive adhesives (such as tapes and medical plasters), insulating glass sealants, and waterproof sealants for automotive and refrigeration applications. Medium molecular weight PIB is particularly favored due to its good shear stability and compatibility with various substrates.

 

General Adhesives

Low molecular weight polyisobutylene can be used as a tackifier in the production of various adhesives, sealants, and rubber-processing bonding agents.

 

 

Applications of Polyisobutylene in Rubber Compounds

 

In the rubber industry, polyisobutylene is mainly used as a modifier and processing aid.

 

Rubber Modifier

High molecular weight polyisobutylene can be blended with natural rubber or synthetic rubbers (such as butyl rubber and styrene-butadiene rubber) to significantly improve gas tightness, waterproof performance, aging resistance, and mechanical strength. Typical products include inner tubes, sealing strips, and waterproof membranes.

 

Plasticizer and Softener

In rubber and plastic processing, PIB polymer acts as a plasticizer and softener, improving processing performance and flexibility.

 

Anti-Aging and Protective Agent

Polyisobutylene effectively resists oxidation, ozone, and ultraviolet radiation. When added to rubber compounds, it helps slow down aging and extends product service life.

 

Electrical Insulation Materials

Taking advantage of its excellent electrical insulation properties, high molecular weight PIB is used in wire and cable insulation layers and waterproof insulating materials.
