Polyisobutylene (PIB), abbreviated as polyisobutylene, is a linear saturated polymer obtained through the cationic polymerization of isobutylene. Due to its unique chemical stability and physical properties, it finds extensive applications across numerous industries. This substance is colorless, odorless, and non-toxic, exhibiting resistance to heat, oxygen, ozone, chemicals, ultraviolet radiation, and acids/alkalis. Additionally, polyisobutylene exhibits high volume resistivity, a low coefficient of thermal expansion, excellent electrical insulation properties, and the advantage of leaving no carbon residue upon pyrolysis.

 

Physically, polyisobutylene can exist as a viscous liquid or an elastic rubber-like substance, primarily determined by its molecular weight. Products with molecular weights below 30,000 are typically liquid, while those with higher molecular weights are solid.
